I have done this to asses what kind of foods I eat and how much nutrition I am getting from my daily diet. I find it very important to know what my body is taking in and how it will affect me and my daily routine. The foods we eat play a big role in performance in class, the workplace, sports and in everything else in life. We can not expect to get the most out of our body while feeding it the wrong things and not receiving the right nutrition. In my week of researching myself and my eating habits I was pretty surprised at my findings and just how big of a role my diet plays in my active lifestyle. As a college student and athlete I lead a very demanding lifestyle that places a lot of mental and physical stress on my body. With this kind of lifestyle it is mandatory to always be running at the top of my game everyday whether it be simply taking notes during lecture or taking out a running back during football practice. While my current diet is not absolutely horrible, it is definitely not the kind of diet a student athlete should have to be at the top of their game. I have quite a few weaknesses in my diet that I plan to solve by either cutting certain foods outs or greatly limiting their intake. I was shocked to find out just how many of my calories come from fat and unsaturated fat. In many of my meals the percentage of calories from fat came pretty close to fifty percent which is completely unacceptable. The recommended amount is somewhere between twenty to thirty percent of my diet so I am pretty far from that amount which is not good at all. One more thing I found to be pretty scary was how much bad cholesterol I take in. Too much cholesterol can be a horrible thing since I definitely do not want clogged up arteries, now or later on in life. A factor that is in my advantage is how much physical activity my week consists of. I workout with weights three to four times a week and do plenty of cardio during football practice which helps burn off a lot of what I eat. This still does not justify my diet because with less fat and cholesterol intake I will have less wasted energy and can focus more on building my body up in a healthy manner. While my diet is far from perfect I do thinks there is quite a few things that I eat that definitely do help my body and keep it running effective enough. I drink plenty of water throughout the day, in fact I usually drink something close to one hundred ounces everyday but I did not include this in my food log since most of it is sweated out in football practice or while working out on my own. I also found that my protein intake is also pretty sufficient. I have a good amount of protein with every meal from breakfast through dinner. This is mandatory because of all the wear and tear I put on my body and it aids in muscle recovery so I can perform to my fullest. While too much protein can be harmful to the kidneys I believe most of the protein in my diet is utilized and any extra is flushed away safely because of all the water I consume. While my diet is still far from perfect I know that I still get a lot out of it. To make my diet better not only do I need to remove such factors such as excessive fat or sugar, but I also need to add certain things to it. In my research I found that I definitely do not eat nearly enough fruits and vegetables daily to give my body enough vitamins and minerals. This is partly because my main food source is the school’s cafeteria selection which does not always give the best selection. What I need to do is take advantage of every opportunity I do get to eat these beneficial foods. If I can find a way to get more fruits and vegetables in my diet I believe it will help a lot in balancing out my diet. While my current diet has not proved to be too much of a health problem for me right now I can see where it could be a big problem later on in my life. Right now I am very active physically and use a lot of calories for energy to get me through the day. While this proves true for me right now I know that later on in life I will not be as physically active since. It will be very hard to keep the same level of physical activity after college when I am working a full time job or even raising a family. So to stay healthy later on in life it is mandatory that I start healthy eating habits now so I can carry them with me in my older age. This research really opened my eyes and has allowed to me to pinpoint out exactly what I need to change and what I need to keep the same. So many people live their lives day in and day out thinking their diets will never catch up to them and that it does not have a huge effect on how they perform on a daily basis. I myself was one of these people until just recently, I feel now that my eyes have been opened and I know just how important it is to lead a healthy lifestyle not just with physical activity but with what I put into my body as well. Starting immediately there will be a big change in my diet and I will strive everyday to make my diet healthier and not just eat whatever I feel like eating.

If Dad gets a promotion the hold family shares the feelings of esteem with Dad. The point I'm trying to make is that in quality interpersonal relationship you will start to feel some of things that I feel which allows you to better understand me and communicate with me. Are Computers Making People Dependent On Technology? Technology comes in many forms and no aspect of our lives is untouched by some form of technology or another. Technology is defined as the practical application of science to commerce or industry. Technological development into present day has been meteoric to say the least. With the advancements of nearly every aspect of human life having some tie with technology, one might start to see a synergistic relationship between humans and technology. However, while some would believe this relationship has been beneficial for us, we believe there have been detrimental effects from our growing dependence on technology. Technology is changing our culture in such a way that we may be expected to be available and online at anytime of the day or night. The technologies that started out to provide assistance in completing our daily tasks have now become a vital part of survival. This paper argues that humans have formed a detrimental symbiotic relationship with technology in its many forms. This paper will investigate the changes that technology has affected, and show that we are becoming less dependent on ourselves and more detrimentally dependent on our technological accomplishments. The way society does business and commerce is very dependent on the reliability on technology and thus, technology failures will cause markets to stop and bring the whole economy to a halt. Common adolescent angst from the real world can be replaced by a life online. Addiction is a term describing a physical or physiological de pendence on something habit forming. One may argue that this addiction, to computers in this case, may simply be a phase. However, it can be seen as a serious condition when one considers the fact that centres for dealing with this type of addiction are springing up, some of which are a sub-facility under centres that treat addictions which have long been accepted as severe, such as drugs and alcohol. If the treatment for this is similar to other addictions which are widely accepted as bad, why is this phenomenon not receiving as much attention? Multitasking is a skill often prized in todays fast paced society. However, studies have shown that our brain on computers operate differently from a natural brain. The attention of the present generation is often split between multiple information sources, and it seems vital to be able to be able to manage them all, be they instant messaging (IM), checking e-mails, reading the news, taking phone calls, and so forth. However, some scientists say that these short bursts of information, leading our attentions in many directions, are changing the way we think and operate. Research shows that people who are heavy multitaskers have problems focusing and selecting relevant information. Researchers claim that after prolonged exposure to this kind of operation, the brain is re-wired and the problems associated with multitasking, such as lack of focus are then carried into the natural state of the brain. In a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (Ophira, Nass , and Wagner), a group of over 250 students were surveyed to study the effects of multitasking. The results clearly illustrated our point; that the lightest multitaskers were able to perform better than the heavy multitaskers in simple psychological tests. The tests highlighted the fact that multitaskers were less able to filter out unrelated information. Furthermore, other tests conducted showed that the heavy multitaskers continuously sought new information, instead of using older, more valuable information. Our reliance on technology has dramatically improved communication, making it more robust, efficient and informative. In the current times, the ease of communication has allowed vast amount of data and information to be transmitted all over world instantly. For example, soldiers fighting the war in the Middle East are able to call using Voice-Over-Internet-Protocol and webcam technology to communicate with family members. This has allowed families to be assured that their loved ones are safe especially when news of casualty can be broadcasted within minutes, 24 hours a day. However, with the current efficiency of instant messaging and social networking, more and more people are becoming overly dependent up to the point of addiction. Issues have been raised over employees spending up to 40 minutes per week on social networking sites during working hours, costing employers an estimated US$2.25 billion. The loss in productivity arises not only from the direct loss in the hours working but also from the reduced productivity of employees from social networking sites becoming an additional distraction. On the other hand, social networking sites are also becoming excellent resources for human resource manager as it offers revealing information of potential and current employees social activity. Furthermore, it has been linked to another issue of society becoming dependent on social networking and posting potentially sensitive personal information such as where one is at or what one is doing. The dependence on technology for communication in the society has also meant that humans are increasingly communicating through a device; which reduced human to human first hand interaction. The decrease of interpersonal interaction in turn reduces ones interpersonal skill which is one of the most basic and fundamental way of communication (Wheeler). Interpersonal communication cannot replace communication through emails, text messages and calls as 55% of the communication is conveyed through body language. Eye contact, gestures and facial expressions and the use of tone and inflections in voice communication are often lost through modern communication technology resulting in less expressive communication or miscommunication. In conclusion, we believe that we have presented facts which support our argument that we have grown detrimentally dependent on technology. We have explored the many facets of technological development which are firmly embedded in most aspects of modern life, and we have strived to analyze how the effects of these developments are detrimental on society. We maintain that the ramifications of our reliance on new medicine, social media, and technology in education, commerce and communication are a disservice to society. While we think that these bindings are detrimental, we do not support a complete disconnection from them. We conclude with the fact that while there are indeed benefits to be had from these advancements, but we, as a society should learn to harness the useful ones, instead of allowing them all to run our lives.

Massacre in Edwidge Danticat's The Farming of Bones The massacre that Edwidge Danticat describes in The Farming of Bones is a historical event. In 1937, the Dominican Republic’s dictator, Rafael Trujillo, ordered the slaughter of Haitians on the border of the two countries. Twelve thousand Haitians died during the massacre (Roorda 301). The Massacre River, which forms the northern portion of the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic, was named for a separate massacre in the nineteenth-century of French soldiers by revolting native slaves. Although the river has been the site of much tragedy in the past, it â€Å"shows no mark† of the violence that has taken place there (Van Boven par. 2). Danticat states that â€Å"nature has no memory† (qtd. in Holmes par. 5). On a visit to the Massacre River, Danticat observed that â€Å"people were using it, almost oblivious† (Holmes par. 6). Even Haitians did not know the truth about the past of the river. One of Danticat’s reasons for writing The Farming of Bones was to tell the story of the 1937 massacre for the world to hear â€Å"so that [these things] don’t happen again† (Holmes p. 12). The Massacre River was, in fact, Danticat’s inspiration to write the book (Wachtel 108). She sees the river as â€Å"both sad and comforting† in Hispaniola’s history (Wechtel 107). The river is both a site of grief and a site of hope. Although so many people have died in the river, Haitians still use it to â€Å"cleanse their labor’s residue off their bodies, reconnect with their community, and pay homage to their dead† (Shemak 96). The overall objective of this research was to document people’s reactions, attitudes, motivations, and behaviors that have affected online purchasing behaviors. The World Wide Web has been accessible to the public now for over twenty years. It came upon the world and exploded in popularity like few things have done in the history of the world. The purpose of this research is to understand how individual behaviors affect online consumerism. According to Hawkins and Mothersbaugh (2010) online consumer behavior can be defined as â€Å"the study of individuals, groups, or organizations and the process they use to select, secure, use, and dispose of products, services, experiences, or ideals to satisfy needs† and the impacts that these processes have on the consumer and society†. There are many variables to consider when outlining behaviors of internet consumerism. Three main factors are affected by behaviors of online consumers, â€Å"attitudes towards online shopping, motivations, such as price, convenience and hedonic motivations, and online information search† (Vazquez & Xu, 2009). If a person has a positive experience of shopping on the internet, then their attitude will affect the outcome of purchasing online. Online consumers feel more in control when they can search with relative ease of low prices and special offers. A great motivation of online shopping is the comparison of prices, more information is available online concerning the products, which allows the consumer to make better decisions. The problem of online consumers is important and requires further research, because online shopping could become the way of shopping for most of the world. In contrast to this scenario, is the fact that we are losing our ability to maintain a high level of customer service on- site. The employees many shoppers encounter seem more to be filling a spot than actively engaging in helping consumers with purchases or becoming knowledgeable about what they sell. Online consumerism is not however without its apprehensions. Research conducted by Janda, stated in her article that there were, â€Å"four consumer online concerns identified, privacy, security, credibility, and virtual experience† all having negative effects on consumer purchasing (2008, p. 339). Online consumers are worried about their personal information being collected when purchasing on the internet. The transference of information makes some consumers nervous and they do not want to take the risk. Shipping and return policies is also a major concern along with the credibility of the online retailers when looking into the merchandise descriptions. Consumers that had more experience with navigating the internet felt safer and comfortable while using the internet at their residence or on the job, rather than using community computers (Koyuncu & Lien, 2003, p. 721). Another negative behavioral pattern documented is that of compulsive buying tendencies. These tendencies to over buy can have detrimental effects on the consumer, notably affecting monies, feelings, and relationships. According to â€Å"The Relationships Between Consumers’ Tendencies to Buy Compulsively and Their Motivation to Shop and Buy on the Internet,† Somewhere between five and nine percent of America’s population could be identified as people who have a propensity to compulsively buy (Kukar-Kinney, Ridgeway, & Monroe, 2009). Motivators of this type of behavior include the very key ingredients of online shopping. These motivations are the following items that may be purchased at any time, shopping can be done frequently, a broader variety ex ist, and also purchases may be brought in private. According to this research the following results show that, â€Å"search costs were the most important motivation, followed by product assortment/price, brand equity, transaction costs, customer orientation, and perceived quality. The least important motivation associated with online auction behaviors was social interaction. (Jeon, Crustsinger, & Kim, 2008, p. 36). To determine which factors and variables are associated with online consumer behaviors, several questionnaires will be emailed to a random chosen amount of email participants. Summary The short story „Evelineâ€Å", written by James Joyce in 1904 and published in 1914 as the fourth of fifteen short stories in „Dublinersâ€Å", deals with the problems of a young girl who isn’t able to leave home because of feelings of responsibility and obligation. Eveline Hill is a 19-year old girl, who works in a department store in Dublin, where she is criticised and ordered around. Since the death of her mother she manages the household and cares for her two younger siblings. Eveline’s character was one of the most complex, and oddest I’ve ever read. I understand that the story took place in a different era, but I felt Eveline should have been stronger and more in control of her life.
